CONCERT TITLE: Tristan and Iseult
GROUP NAME: The Medieval Beasts
INSTRUMENTATION: 3 musicians: Celtic harp, Brass Wire Harp, Lute, Psalter
CONCERT INFORMATION: The long, dark nights of Medieval Europe were rich with stories. But one legend was told and
beloved beyond all others, that of Tristan and Iseult. Filled with love, passion, magic, and death,
it captivated listeners because it was the mirror of their own hearts, minds and souls. This made
for evenings of brilliance and enchantment throughout the Dark Ages. The Flame of Love
brings this same enchantment into our own time and place.
OUTREACH: The Medieval Beasts spent two days in Pittsburgh. They spent time at Fox Chapel Senior High
School and St. Bedes.
NUMBER REACHED: 425
Some quotes from the Fox Chapel students and teachers:
. "That was SO COOL! I felt thrust into medieval Ireland. The speaker's
voice was perfect for narration, for the accent alone was so interesting,
and his dramatic pauses so effective. The instrumentalists were so
skilled. I love the way each performance is unique in terms of pitches,
and the way the music is less of a task mentally than a feeling, the way
it should be. The entire performance was incredibly beautiful, and I am
grateful to have experienced it! Now I'm into the mood to go to a
Renaissance or Shakespeare Festival or to learn to make a love potion at
Hogwarts!"
"You guys are great! The breaks to discuss the types of instruments and
the origins were really interesting since I didn't know too much about
medieval music or instruments. The personalities and banter of the
musicians made the presentation that much more interesting."
"What a tremendous opportunity for students to "step back" with you in
time, in music, in language! Thank you for sharing your passion with Fox
Chapel Area High School students."
