This 60-minute class will introduce the basics of copyright—the myths, what is/is not protected by copyright, finding free-to-use images, complying with copyright: linking, creative commons licenses, obtaining permission. Includes a brief introduction to "Fair Use." THIS IS NOT TO BE CONSTRUED AS LEGAL ADVICE. FOR LEGAL ADVICE, PLEASE CONSULT YOUR ATTORNEY.
- Attendees will understand what categories of information are/are not protected by copyright.
- Attendees will understand that "every educational use" is NOT automatically a "fair use." The Fair Use analysis process, based on the Four Factors, will be introduced.
- Attendees will understand how to comply with copyright in papers, presentations for courses and conferences, etc.
- Attendees will become aware of sources of "free-to-reuse" images, text, media, etc.
- Attendees will understand when and how to obtain permission to use copyrighted works.
- Attendees will become aware of the misinformation/misunderstandings about copyright in the digital age.
EndNote is a bibliographic management tool that allows users to create and organize a library of citations and abstracts and then import them directly into a Microsoft Word document. This 60-minute class will demonstrate how to set up a new library, how to import citations from MEDLINE, how to work with the citation style manager and how to add bibliographic references to a Microsoft Word document.
- Attendees will know how to create an EndNote Library.
- Attendees will know how to import citations from MEDLINE using either Ovid or PubMed.
- Attendees will understand how to use EndNote with Microsoft Word in formatting bibliographic references for paper or grant submission.
This 60-minute class will introduce users to Microsoft Excel 2010 basics.
- Attendees will learn how to read a spreadsheet.
- Attendees will be able to launch standard formulas for basic math functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, averaging, maximums, minimums, counts).
- Attendees will learn how to use formatting features for display and report printing.
- Attendees will learn how to create and manipulate charts.
- Attendees will learn how to link data between worksheets.
- Attendees will be able to use certain short cuts such as the fill handle option.
This 90-minute class will provide attendees with a wide variety of Microsoft PowerPoint presentation skills.
- Attendees will learn how to create PowerPoint presentations, start to finish.
- Attendees will be able to format and customize different slide designs and layouts.
- Attendees will learn how to insert, manipulate, and animate graphics.
- Attendees will learn custom animation features.
- Attendees will learn about using Templates and how to create new ones.
- Attendees will know how to Import and Export to and from other programs (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Word, Access etc.).
- Attendees will understand the basics of developing an effective presentation.
- Attendees will learn how to enhance presentations using sounds, hypertext links, action buttons, pointer options, handouts and more.
This 60-minute class will introduce the basics of searching the National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE database using the PubMed interface.
- Attendees will know how to access PubMed and be familiar with its content.
- Attendees will be able to conduct basic PubMed searches, limit and combine their results, save them to the Clipboard, and find Related Articles.
- Attendees will understand how to use the Journals and MeSH databases, search by citation, and find Clinical Queries.
- Attendees will learn how to set filters and save searches using My NCBI.
This 45-minute class will introduce building a bibliography using the RefWorks bibliographic citation management program.
- Attendees will set up a RefWorks account and learn how to access their account remotely.
- Attendees will set up a RefWorks bibliographic database of references by importing/exporting references from PubMed, OVID, and other databases.
- Attendees will learn how to set up folders, search, edit and format references in their RefWorks bibliography.
- Attendees will learn how to add citations from RefWorks into papers using Write-N-Cite and One Line / One Cite View.
- Attendees will be able to format their paper and bibliography.
- Attendees will be able to change the format of the citations and bibliographies in their papers.
