Mission Renaissance & Baroque (R&B), Bringing Early Music
to Pittsburgh, presents performances of the music of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque and Early
Classical periods and fosters a broader understanding and appreciation of the music, arts and culture
of the times.
What is R&B?
It's old. It's new.
It's music of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, and Early Classical periods
(roughly 1200 to 1800) performed by the best artists on the planet today.
It's familiar
favorites. It's Pittsburgh premieres of just-discovered musical treasures.
It's HIP — which
means "Historically Informed Performance." Our performers go back in time for music, instrument
designs, and performance styles - bringing to the 21st century music as it sounded in the time and
place of its creation.
It's unpredictable. Because you might hear a turn-of-the-millennium
piece from either 1000 or 2000. Because you might hear Vivaldi's Four Seasons played not on
strings but on recorders. Because sometimes "historically informed" means improvised.
It's
one of the first organizations in the world to focus exclusively on presenting Early Music and it's
still recognized as one of the best.
It's an audience so enthusiastic that musicians from all
over the world clamor to come back to Pittsburgh - to you - again and again.
Ever wonder how Renaissance and Baroque got it's start?
